New Graduate Nursing Program Components

The New Graduate Nursing program includes 2 months of weekly classroom time held in 8-hour blocks, as well as being assigned to a preceptor on the unit for direction and guidance.

The program incorporates information pertinent to areas from around the hospital, whether it is adult, pediatric or neonatal care. Nurses working with the pediatric population attend the majority of nurse residency classes, but are on a track that diverges from the main program for four sessions.

During these pediatric-specific sessions, participants learn about diagnoses, treatments, and nursing considerations unique to infants and children. Through a blend of lectures, case studies, and skills labs, new employees develop a strong foundation on which to build their pediatric nursing practice.

P/SL and Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children offer a "New to the NICU" Program for the new graduate nurse. This program consists of a 12-week orientation period in the NICU or graduate nursery. Weekly classes are included which focus on common problems and nursing care of the high risk neonate.
