Program Specifics

Department Vision

Our patients always receive the safest and most effective drug therapy from a team of pharmacy professionals who accept responsibility for their drug therapy.  Leading the profession in the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains region, the pharmacy at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children is the best place to learn and practice pharmacy.

Residency Purpose Statement

The PGY1 residency program is designed to train selected, highly motivated, and highly qualified pharmacists in advanced pharmacy practice. This residency focuses on development of the knowledge, attitude, and skills needed to provide quality, compassionate and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. The goal of the program is to assist the resident in developing specific skills and competencies that are needed to assume leadership roles in the profession. Upon completion of the PGY1 program, residents are equipped to succeed in a variety of positions, including clinical pharmacy specialist, clinical faculty, or continuation of postgraduate training in a PGY2 program or fellowship.

Residency Experience

The residency year is structured with several required rotations along with time for elective rotations. All residents will participate longitudinally in the provision of clinical and distributive services offered in the Department of Pharmacy.  Residents develop, present, and prepare a manuscript for a major research project.  They also provide formal educational lectures to pharmacy staff, students, and the community. Residents serve as preceptors for PharmD. students who are completing clinical clerkship training on site.

Staffing Responsibilities

Each resident will fulfill service component (staffing) responsibilities within various areas of the hospital campus. ASHP and P/SL view the service component as necessary in preparing a resident to practice independently. Currently our service component plan is for staffing every other weekend.

Residency Stipend and Benefits

Residents are paid a $40,000 stipend for the 52-week residency year. Twenty days of paid time off (PTO) are included; this time is expected to be used for holidays, job interviews, travel to meetings (other than ASHP Midyear and the Western States Residency Conference), and/or illness. Medical and dental insurance is an optional benefit that the resident may elect. All residents must complete a physical and health screening examination prior to starting the residency program. Holiday schedules will be determined in accordance with department policy.

ASHP Residency Match Program

The P/SL residency program participates in the ASHP Resident Match Program. [Match # 198113] Therefore, all applicants must be registered for the match. Registration can be accessed online via the Match web site at www.natmatch.com/ashprmp. RMP recommends registering by early January and there is a fee for registering.

Pharmacist Licensure

Residents who match at P/SL are required to obtain licensure in the state of Colorado.  The licensure process takes approximately 6-8 weeks and residents should strive to obtain licensure prior to July 1st. We recommend you retain photocopies of all materials submitted for licensure. More information can be found at  http://www.dora.state.co.us/pharmacy/.

Application Deadline

The deadline for receipt of an application and all of the materials necessary to review the application is January 4th. Therefore, you must ensure that transcripts and references are processed in a timely manner so that these materials reach us before the application deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.


Interviews are an integral part of our evaluation of potential residents. We expect that serious applicants will also want to evaluate our clinical site. Therefore, we require applicants to schedule an on-site interview. This interview will last approximately eight hours. We will make every effort to accommodate the current commitments and educational programs of the applicant when interviews are being scheduled. Application materials must be completed and submitted prior to the scheduling of an on-site interview.

Educational Benefits

Costs incurred for registration and travel to the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Western States Residency Conference will be paid by P/SL. Society memberships such as ASHP will be maintained by the resident.

Shared office space is provided for residents.

Computer Services

Instructional classes in the use of software programs are provided. Major software programs in word processing, database management, presentation graphics, spreadsheets, etc. are available. Patient information is also available throughout the hospital and pharmacy via the hospital’s information system.

Dorsey Medical Library

The Dorsey Medical Library at P/SL provides books, journals, and other materials necessary to serve the immediate informational needs of its customers who have been identified as hospital personnel/departments, physicians, patients and their significant others, and affiliates. In addition, library services will provide manual and online research assistance for its customers.  The library is open Monday-Friday and online journal access is available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
