Tom Brown, MD
Medical Director, Bariatric Surgery Program
Dr. Tom Brown is the Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Illinois and completed a surgical residency at Western Reserve Care System in Ohio. Today, he is a board-certified, general and bariatric surgeon who has more than 27 years of clinical experience in performing general surgery, 14 of which have been recently dedicated to the practice of bariatric surgery.
Dr. Brown is one of the leading laparoscopic surgeons in the Denver area, demonstrating skill and experience in executing 3,500 bariatric surgical procedures, including the gastric bypass, the Lap-Band, gastric sleeve, and bariatric revisional surgery. When doing bariatric surgery, Dr. Brown performs 99% of his procedures laparoscopically. He established the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery—recognized Center of Excellence Bariatric Surgery Program at P/SL.
Katayun Irani, M.D.
Dr. Katayun Irani is a board-certified general surgeon who did a fellowship in Bariatric surgery at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital, a renowned program in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery in Portland, OR. She completed her general surgery training at New York University in New York City, during which she did additional research training at Harvard University in Boston, MA. Dr. Irani started a bariatric program at Willamette Valley Medical Center after which she moved to Asheville, NC where she practiced for several years, helping build the program. During her time there, she was appointed Assistant Professor to University of North Carolina Medical school where she educated medical students in the field of general and bariatric surgery.
She specializes in Roux-en-Y gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, revisional procedures, and numerous endoscopic procedures. She also offers numerous general surgery procedures including hernia repair (inguinal, umbilical, and incisional), Laparoscopic gallbladder removal, Laparoscopic antireflux procedures.She has now moved to the area to change her practice and focus on mostly Bariatric Surgery, her passion. The transformation in her patients lives, which she feels privileged to be part of, is what drove her to this change. She focuses on a patient centered approach and prides herself in making patients and families feel comfortable. She helps educate and support patients and their families throughout their journey, including the preparation period, the operative period, and the follow up, for the rest of their lives.
Jody Halouska, RD
Jody earned her Bachelor’s Degrees in Nutritional Science and Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Jody completed her dietetic internship at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Jody has also earned her Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Jody joined Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence in 2008. Jody is passionate about helping empower patients to make lifestyle changes for long-term weight loss success. Jody believes that education and behavior change are paramount in achieving long-term weight loss success. She stresses nutrition basics, physical activity, food choices, cooking methods, vitamin and mineral supplementation, finding alternatives to emotional and boredom eating and dealing with one’s relationship with food. Prior to joining the Bariatric team, Jody was a personal trainer and worked in a variety of positions educating and counseling adults and youth on nutrition, fitness and health. Outside of work Jody enjoys spending time with her family, running, hiking, kickboxing and yoga.
Shannon Smiley, RD
Shannon has been a Registered Dietitian since 1998, with the past eight years specialized in the field of weight management. She has held various positions as a Bariatric Dietitian and Bariatric Coordinator. Prior to entering weight management, Shannon worked as a nutrition educator and counselor for U.S. Military Personnel in Germany and as a Clinical Nutrition Manager for one of San Diego’s largest hospitals. Shannon graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nutrition from Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, CA, and completed her Dietetic Internship at San Diego State University. She is also certified through the American Dietetic Association as a Weight Management Counselor. Shannon is passionate about educating patients from all walks of life and assisting them through their weight loss journey. Shannon focuses on teaching patients about basic nutrition, fundamentals of cooking, grocery shopping, vitamin/mineral supplementation and exercise guidelines. In her personal life Shannon loves spending time with her husband and daughters, practicing hot yoga and running.
Elisa Fadum-Montoya, MSW, LCSW
Bariatric Social Worker
Elisa Fadum-Montoya, LCSW joined the Bariatric team as the part-time Clinical Social Worker in 2011, after completing: Bachelors/Education (1991), Masters/Social Work (1998), Clinical License (2000) and working over two decades in the child welfare, family therapy, and juvenile court fields. Elisa is a successful LapBand patient, losing more than 100 lbs. Elisa strongly emphasizes patient’s need to embrace their changes, to manage their struggles and to find healthy ways to foster growth. Elisa shares her work time with Denver Health and her off-duty time with her husband raising their two sons.
